happy new year, family time, todaymyway.com

I grew up in a house where the routine of the day consisted of crumpling pages of old newspapers into knots, placing them among the chopped wood, lighting them and hoping that the fire underneath the stove would take. My mum might have repeated the process two or more times before the fire sparkled out promising a meal, hot water and warmth in the winter. I took over the ritual of the dawn not long before I flew abroad, joyously watching it smouldering away because of my efforts. She would manage the whole household, walk until late hours tiding up, clattering the dishes as me and my brother watched the blinding kitchen light from the opposite room. Today I realized I am trying to recreate some of that childhood magic through candlelit interiors and lights dimmed so that they throw long shadows on tiled floor and create familiar nooks full of future memories. There's always a candle flickering away for hours on this surface or another while lost in exploration we spend our days (add hot chocolate with marshmallows and another level of awesome is certainly achieved).

During this past month we've squeezed in as much family time as possible (chicken pox, you'll never be forgotten but you may be forgiven) - we drew pictures, played cars and watched alarming amount of movies this little girl was once obsessed about. The lack of scheduled and necessary always feels so good. Until next year, we'll roam and run, plan and achieve. I kid. Only a little. Have a fab New Year friends! x

how I changed, 30 day challenge, todaymyway.com

To me the end of the year is the surprise element within the season of sparkle, champagne and nonexistent snow in this area. Usually December takes me through the wonderland of Nordmann fir fragranced interiors and hand-embellished baubles, invites to a quiet Facebook party of well wishes on my brother's big day, then stops breathing heavily in order to prepare for a day like no other - serving me the consecutive digit on hand appliqued cards and helium balloons so the occupied mind responds to the last hours of an old year in a typical way that it's not ready to be called to action. Every year staring at the customized calendar's last page I feel confused and find myself unacceptably late in the resolution game.

Was it a good year, a bad one? One of the best? I'm shifting away from summarizing it so unequivocally. In so many ways it was a fabulous time of getting to know myself and those I cannot live without. I'm looking forward to experience a great deal of it again and commit myself to expressing more, no matter how scary the idea becomes. And have I changed this past twelve months, two years? If there's one thing noticeable, I'll point at the outer surface. I didn't really get my style (hair, clothes, finishing touches) until I started paying more attention to what was going on on the glossier side of magazines. In between the rain, some traveling and writing I've grown into loving anything quick and easy with a relaxed finish (my bangs are the result of seeking simple ways to have nice and well behaved hair, let me tell you it's OK if I know how to handle a round brush so the quest for managing simple continues). In a good company of pieces I never thought I'd wear (loose fitting, drawing attention, sometimes quite affordable), I feel nothing less than awesome. Or is it just too cold to care? I'll figure it out next year. x

If I say it was one of our quieter, more relaxed and intimate Christmases, I wouldn't mind asking for repeating the experience next year. The spirit, the feel, the absence of rush. But holidays like these remind me why I love them and can hardly do it without the people I am close to. There is a different vibe to a family Christmas: this wonderful time of conversations in cosy little groups, exchanging greetings and latest revelations without even realizing it. I miss it on a daily basis, I miss it more when the streets start to adjust to our festive mood in each corner of town. I miss it undoubtedly more because of Nadia and her unstoppable appetite for people. But this year's festive season was good in its more reflective state, lazier activities that often cannot be fully appreciated until there is a deep understanding of it or simply a need for longer pause in the company of a few. There was also a silly virus thrown into the mix that stilled us for most of the month, not a mood booster whatsoever. But I'm grateful for what it has showed me - many things are taken for granted, health and vitality included. We like to find ourselves overseeing things, mistake silver hair for a change in light, possibly to prove we're still light years away from the finish line if not nowhere near it but it's quite the opposite. Quite the surprise.

We sat playing by the artichoke green tree settled in our living room like the decorations that seem to always be there. We ate delicious dinners and filling leftovers, laughed at old jokes and made new promises, figured out the ways to catch bad guys and share the x-box controller at peak times. We snuggled and made our three seater sofa the favourite spot most of the time. How was your Christmas, friends? xx

25 presents, christmas morning, christmas magic, todaymyway.com

christmas magic, thoughts on things, todaymyway.com

Happy Christmas everyone!
This Christmas belonged to Nadia, her hands were busy to decorate, to be in charge of switching the fairy lights on and off, to wrap and unwrap accordingly. She laughed the loudest and played the hardest, there was no regular pattern in how to spend the days around her and her untamed energy. It was quite a task to find the right time of opening that one present a day especially on school days. Still in her pajamas with no end in yawning, she rushed to reach the right number of the day. And she was pretty good at that task too.

December the first, the moment I was waiting for since picking up an owl keyring sometime in June, Nadia was getting propped up on the couch with a doubt on her face and a little smile covering her uneasiness or excitement or both as I reached over to pick up the package she pointed at. Gifts were still put up on the shelf as we didn't have a Christmas tree that early in the month so she needed help with getting to them. With our encouraging head nods she began tearing the parchment paper - at first slowly and delicately but soon her thrill took over and it required using different methods to get closer to her gift. Once it was out of layers of paper I overdosed on, she looked up on us and frowned. Looked back at what she had in hand and checked it from all sides. Her message was clear: 'It's not Lego', she said disappointingly putting her Peppa Pig soaps on the cotton jersey bunny faces printed on her knees. It was a moment we will not once experience - how to recreate the excitement and maybe teach her a lesson or two? Make the experience count? I sat next to her and began whispering. I knew this could be exciting yet challenging build up to more awaited gifts but that's the fun of it all. The surprise, the unexpected, the game of guessing of what's inside from examining either the scale or the texture or a shape. Quite magical. Tall and lanky as a flute? It may be anything!

I guess she knew that for every awaited gift there would be a couple Santa was a little relaxed about but the guessing game and the excitement coming from it took over. Each day her fingers brought a thing alive - I loved her body impressions each time she unwrapped the box as she would be as surprised as having an 'of course' moment especially if the shape or sound it made was in fact a totally different object. A game of guessing, our new favourite Christmas tradition.

To tell you more about the work behind the idea, I have to look back as far as early spring because the concept consisted of gifts that had meaning, were useful and would make a perfect functional addition to our lives instead of being bought just because it's the season and rummaging through shelves days before Christmas seems appropriate. I liked the idea of finding something I knew Nadia and Damian would like way before the festive fever began, without pressure and expectations, with more time for deciding and feeling inspired. It's also a lesson in patience and being considerate about our tiny space but if it brings a silly grin to my face just by holding something in July that will make hearts swell in December, well I will shamelessly bask in that genius thought. The idea of spreading the joys of gifting across the whole year was the unbeatable factor to go for it. I don't want to experiment with Christmas traditions and modify them each year as the aim is to settle on some and recreate them with excitement for whatever years we have left. I do however want to perfect it, then leave as is - not to feel a little too overwhelmed with the abundance of things, restrict the quantity and substitute with fun-packed experiences. So just in a couple of days the hunt begins again and I can't wait to keep my eyes open and heart racing!

P.S. Yes, there was some Lego involved in creating memories this year.

christmas art project, glass painting, christmas magic, todaymyway.com

No two days are the same around here - especially with that extra present appearing each day and all the time we have for crafting and being super proud of it. I hope we'll stick to juggling just as much if not more in the new year. Today I wanted to show you our latest project for which we teamed up with Hobbycraft, a fabulous website for all things handmade! I had a pleasure of browsing through the gift section to get overwhelmed with original ideas focused on gifting. I was especially drawn to craft kits we have limited skills on like candle making or glass painting but which offer a great degree of creativity and flexibility with the final result. Although I was asked to choose one kit, I knew I'd be happy with most of the ideas featured. As a person upcycling jars and bottles whenever possible, I was curious to give Kirstie Allsopp Glass Painting Kit a try (although I'm eying the soap making one for further experimenting). It contained everything we needed to make a beautiful use of any glassware we stock in abundance: paint, outline designs, acetate sheets to practice, cards and envelopes for some more creativity.

The process of creating a beautiful stained glass imitation spoke to Nadia straight away and before we knew it, she was making the most colourful creation to date. I on the other hand had fun with a tea light holder which was then decorated with glitter, sequins and sparkly gems glued to the surface. I love that those creations cannot be replicated as techniques and ideas vary from person to person and the best part? Functionality as well as the decorative element! Definitely a perfect Christmas gift for all the artists out there whatever craft they're into. x

resolutions, new year, thoughts on things, todaymyway.com

Now that I have realized the discomfort from sitting on the fence, the turnaround in attitude is pretty obvious. Will it be a long read? Coffee-break subject at least? I'll be serious in short paragraphs and say silly things in others. I also realized it's December which makes my ramblings a bit more appropriate, like ending a chapter with a few wise thoughts not making much sense at times.

Am I moving forward? Am I hardly moving? I try to avoid posting articles revealing uncomfortable truths yet they are available exclusively between lines and behind highly pigmented lipstick. Just help yourselves whenever you please. Where do I start? I'm a person who avoids being busy, I get anxious when there is too many things going on yet I always plan to have hands full. I know, silly as my moves on the dancefloor. I've been spending days convinced the world is waiting with open arms for when I'm ready to go for it. I love challenges, new beginnings, first page of a freshly printed book but I have never allowed myself to see what’s on the next page and the one after it. I never happened to find out if there was a happy ending. I've been finding it easy to start off nicely but somehow in the process (and fairly quickly in that matter), I'm off the course. Off for a long time or for good. It's a super simple way to never achieve anything if you wanna take tips ;) Dreaming big while briefly focusing on living and enjoying life is what I do best. Worked it to perfection. It cannot end well, waiting for my ship to come instead of swimming out to it.

I took a very safe path but I won't announce to make every effort to keep my 2015 calendar busy, to be unstoppable to conquer every spare moment. It's not about days filled to the brim, it's about time filled with purpose. My hope is to try again, with excitement and a dose of anticipation in every most convenient time of my life. Celebrating a birthday in a season stuffed with so much meaning helps with organizing my head, prioritizing tasks, articulating resolutions. Hardly glamorous job when getting glammed up for the big night out but essential one for sure. I wanna make room for things I cannot quite verbally describe but which fall into other categories than weekly shopping or finding the best lipstick to suit my skin tone. No commitments, just prioritizing and hoping for the best. I'm very much looking forward to you new year, I really do. x

reindeer, holiday magic, winter, todaymyway.com
winter, family time, christmas magic, todaymyway.com

Weeks flow by, every festive activity has a purpose, we're no longer in a panic mode around here so days before Christmas, we're enjoying family time like never. It's been an extra cuddly time for us because of weeks of sickness and ongoing discomfort for the longest time imaginable. Our sitting area got a lot of use we're not sure we're ready to give up (any virus is easier to manage when you're nice and comfy, remember that). Because this time of a year is meant to be shared with your favourite people and the best part is that all our favourite people are kids, there must be a lot of kid-friendly entertainment. No money or special equipment required. Visiting Santa in his grotto is the kind of fun that made our bellies ache from laughter and that ended with french fries and strawberry ice cream at the local restaurant. There was a ton of satisfaction out of the simple things - real reindeer not ready to pose for the lens of my camera, dancing to festive tunes and starting to laugh just by looking at each of the kids having so much fun. But why stop here? Follow our footpaths in the snowless winter wonderland, there's definitely more to come. xx

salt dough decorations, christmas art project, christmas art, todaymyway.com

We do spend time in our kitchen, please believe it friends. We may produce a decent meal or coffee, but immediately after our Christmas tree was up, the kitchen hasn't seen more commotion. Cookies, salt dough decorations, quick warm meals for after five pm dinners, you guys we're on a roll! It smells divine in our kitchen in December. Just thinking about coming home and flipping some ingredients on the pan makes me giddy. This easy recipe for festive ornaments and fragile figurines is coming right at ya - when combining 300g flour with the same amount of salt, 200ml of water and two tablespoons of oil, in under five minutes flat you'll be able to squeeze the dough into any shape you like (you may need more flour to make the dough less sticky). And you may like odd shapes like we do - from spiders or mice to crooked houses so don't rush the process, just keep experimenting. Yes, they're not edible but so good looking it's a shame there's not an ounce of sugar in the mixture.

Apart from getting busy above the stove, we obsessively wait to open one present each morning, with our messy morning hair on and twisted pajama bottoms. Not even wanting to use the toilet first. Yes, Christmas morning is being repeated each dawn around here and there's definitely no escaping this in coming days. (And enjoy the images of my sweet kitchen assistant helping whenever help is needed between hours of playing Lego Movie on xbox and using up all stickers that have still good useable glue on them).
Have a great day, friends! x

DECORATING FOR THE SEASON, christmas, todaymywayblog

It's never too early for a festive fun. It's never too late either although that calls for a serious conversation as what should be a priority at this time of a year. But we made it and nothing else matters! All twenty five presents wrapped up way before the unwrapping was due (I'll tell you about my crazy idea of opening one present a day later. With photos. And a hot chocolate!), festive cards piled up on the side of my desk, Christmas decorations showing up day after day in various of places yet there was no tree to get creative with, no helping out with activities that could speed up some serious sick days around here. I don't really remember who started it but a couple of well known viruses were on rotation since the end of November - with colds, eye infections and a chicken pox generously gifting all of us with our own allocation of spots. No way we were looking forward to get festive while our bodies didn't feel the urge. Until now, until this very week, this very snowless time. Some people may have seen all shades of fairy lights by now, I'm quick to announce we're not far behind!

As the season is in full swing, I tried to jot down a couple of Christmas traditions we refuse to skip each year as a family. Please do share yours, it's never to good to add some extra special activities to our list. Here's what we've enjoyed so far:
  • visiting holiday markets in our area
  • driving through town checking all the work that went into the Christmas decorations which makes sense only after dark
  • watching Christmas Carol or any themed movie on afternoons no one wants to feel too involved in anything
  • getting a real Christmas tree and decorating it together
  • visiting Santa in his grotto and witnessing series of kids' tantrums along the way
  • taking endless turns riding on a carrousel situated right in the heart of the town center secretly never wanting to get off
  • designing personalized calendar and having it professionally printed and delivered before the old one runs out
  • there's no magic without hand-made ornaments and decorations
  • preparing 25 little gifts to be opened on each day of December leading to a Christmas Day. New this year. My personal favourite.

And this year I'd love to add visiting ice skating rink since all of us fall under the right age to fully enjoy it and pull it off fairly effortlessly. So yes, it feels like Christmas now. xx
