Evenings like these have happened to us throughout each winter, let it be loved and short season or long to the point of hating half of my closet - we've always spent days on the floor. It was our playground, our dry land, a place where anything could work - leisure-wise the most. This carpet is far from exciting in its decorative form but it did not matter on any day we had plans to use it wisely or completely opposite. Our space is small, like lazily small as we haven't tried the tricks of using mirrors or paint to visually stretch it out and the floor seems to be the biggest feature therefore it holds more than any clean surface available. Bricks, lines of cars, board games seem to live to their full potential here only. They do their best, show the truest and most painful nature once stepped on. It's the temporary home to Lego statues and a foster house to drawings that have no permission past the room. But board games with their millionth and therefore so important part are dotting this floor constantly. Nadia is old enough to know and play by the rules each box comes with but all that stubborn and independent enough to refuse to win the manufacturer's way. So we go along with the kind of imagination that finds you unprepared, beats you up just when you were thinking you've been winning and leaves you disorientated near the start even though you've reached halfway on the board. You're also asked to choose a character for the game - forget the pawns and cogs - reach for the nicest toy you can because imitating its voice and silly moves is always a good idea.

This particular game is called Mushroom Picking and as seen among less or more comfortable positions players travel around the board collecting mushrooms and meeting a variety of adventures. The best way of achieving this fast (according to Nadia) is to pick as many mushrooms as the hamper holds (not recommended for people with easily upset stomachs) and race to the finish line. It's nearly impossible to convince her some mushrooms are to look at only but if she is to win she will reap all the benefits along the way too. Still a way to learn and have fun while at it. And then we felt extra ambitious and drew faces, dragons and pandas.

happy new year, family time, todaymyway.com

I grew up in a house where the routine of the day consisted of crumpling pages of old newspapers into knots, placing them among the chopped wood, lighting them and hoping that the fire underneath the stove would take. My mum might have repeated the process two or more times before the fire sparkled out promising a meal, hot water and warmth in the winter. I took over the ritual of the dawn not long before I flew abroad, joyously watching it smouldering away because of my efforts. She would manage the whole household, walk until late hours tiding up, clattering the dishes as me and my brother watched the blinding kitchen light from the opposite room. Today I realized I am trying to recreate some of that childhood magic through candlelit interiors and lights dimmed so that they throw long shadows on tiled floor and create familiar nooks full of future memories. There's always a candle flickering away for hours on this surface or another while lost in exploration we spend our days (add hot chocolate with marshmallows and another level of awesome is certainly achieved).

During this past month we've squeezed in as much family time as possible (chicken pox, you'll never be forgotten but you may be forgiven) - we drew pictures, played cars and watched alarming amount of movies this little girl was once obsessed about. The lack of scheduled and necessary always feels so good. Until next year, we'll roam and run, plan and achieve. I kid. Only a little. Have a fab New Year friends! x

reindeer, holiday magic, winter, todaymyway.com
winter, family time, christmas magic, todaymyway.com

Weeks flow by, every festive activity has a purpose, we're no longer in a panic mode around here so days before Christmas, we're enjoying family time like never. It's been an extra cuddly time for us because of weeks of sickness and ongoing discomfort for the longest time imaginable. Our sitting area got a lot of use we're not sure we're ready to give up (any virus is easier to manage when you're nice and comfy, remember that). Because this time of a year is meant to be shared with your favourite people and the best part is that all our favourite people are kids, there must be a lot of kid-friendly entertainment. No money or special equipment required. Visiting Santa in his grotto is the kind of fun that made our bellies ache from laughter and that ended with french fries and strawberry ice cream at the local restaurant. There was a ton of satisfaction out of the simple things - real reindeer not ready to pose for the lens of my camera, dancing to festive tunes and starting to laugh just by looking at each of the kids having so much fun. But why stop here? Follow our footpaths in the snowless winter wonderland, there's definitely more to come. xx

DECORATING FOR THE SEASON, christmas, todaymywayblog

It's never too early for a festive fun. It's never too late either although that calls for a serious conversation as what should be a priority at this time of a year. But we made it and nothing else matters! All twenty five presents wrapped up way before the unwrapping was due (I'll tell you about my crazy idea of opening one present a day later. With photos. And a hot chocolate!), festive cards piled up on the side of my desk, Christmas decorations showing up day after day in various of places yet there was no tree to get creative with, no helping out with activities that could speed up some serious sick days around here. I don't really remember who started it but a couple of well known viruses were on rotation since the end of November - with colds, eye infections and a chicken pox generously gifting all of us with our own allocation of spots. No way we were looking forward to get festive while our bodies didn't feel the urge. Until now, until this very week, this very snowless time. Some people may have seen all shades of fairy lights by now, I'm quick to announce we're not far behind!

As the season is in full swing, I tried to jot down a couple of Christmas traditions we refuse to skip each year as a family. Please do share yours, it's never to good to add some extra special activities to our list. Here's what we've enjoyed so far:
  • visiting holiday markets in our area
  • driving through town checking all the work that went into the Christmas decorations which makes sense only after dark
  • watching Christmas Carol or any themed movie on afternoons no one wants to feel too involved in anything
  • getting a real Christmas tree and decorating it together
  • visiting Santa in his grotto and witnessing series of kids' tantrums along the way
  • taking endless turns riding on a carrousel situated right in the heart of the town center secretly never wanting to get off
  • designing personalized calendar and having it professionally printed and delivered before the old one runs out
  • there's no magic without hand-made ornaments and decorations
  • preparing 25 little gifts to be opened on each day of December leading to a Christmas Day. New this year. My personal favourite.

And this year I'd love to add visiting ice skating rink since all of us fall under the right age to fully enjoy it and pull it off fairly effortlessly. So yes, it feels like Christmas now. xx

fabulous to be in the minority, cousins, playing Lego, girl and boy, todaymyway.com
cousins, playing Lego, girl and boy, todaymyway.com, family time

Long overdue, but I finally got round to downloading and showing you the day we returned from holiday this summer. Tired as we were, still in our travel gear and making no effort to satisfy our hunger, we grabbed some gifts we bought for Nadia's cousins and headed to meet them as there's nothing more rewarding than seeing your kids reach to each other after such a long break in playing and refusing to play. It was exciting especially there was Lego on hand, a girl or boy favourite. Dads got involved, mums stepped aside, kids watched impatiently as the creatures came to plastic life. Being little girl among little boys is a delight to watch daily, seeing her navigating skillfully through car races and sword fights armed with charm and delicacy simply melts my heart. She loves her cousins to bits, announces cheerfully what she is going to tell them when they meet (showing off new dress or a hair piece waiting for their ecstatic response but really there's only a confused smile she gets in return. We really need to work on the boys a lot more.) and gets immersed in their motorized world more than they get entwined with hers.

And then we had pizza to satisfy our hunger and discovered that some of the time tomboy-ish nature is meant to be to balance all that girlishness there is accumulated. Have a fabulous weekend, friends. xx

explorer's diary, old castle, poland
castle-hunting-www.todaymyway.com

I've been meaning to show you photos of the old castle we took on our way to my dad's house since we got back from Poland. I'm in love with castles and places of enough history to make my heart racing just by touching the stone. I'm creating stories, visualizing ordinary days of land that belonged to hard working people and it makes the whole experience more figured out for my lazy brain on vacation. I loved that this time around our threesome was always accompanied by our dearest much for Nadia's entertainment and delight. We would tell our plans to everyone who listened and agree on joining others with their arrangements whether we fitted in their car or not. Not forgetting I had my dear friend and cousin, Magda almost on my speed dial for quick meetings after she finished work and s l o w paced weekends on any weather situations. So when together with her hubby she offered to take us in a three hour journey and spend the rest of the day on nothing but doing all kind of things together, we thought we really nailed that balance between disobliging presence and excited exhaustion of topics of sorts. It gave me so many ideas of more co-traveling opportunities whenever there will be a chance.

But for the castle... Six hundred years locked behind an iron entrance gate, within every square inch of white stone and above slippery flooring we had trouble staying upright were there to get entwined with. Renovated up to the highest tower we had pleasure of viewing gave us access to almost every part of the building together with a torture chamber (photos on the bottom of this post), dark dungeons full of uncertain ground, floors we ran up and down at top speed to keep up with our little investigator.

The wooden staircase you see below frightened me enormously. It was when I learned I suffer from fear of heights except I really try not to pay attention to this discovery and explore nonetheless. Because how can you not look down, or above and around when you're here to do just so? It was as dreadful as it was awesome but I will continue living my life dangerously. We had the craziest traveling schedule ever but made sure everybody was satisfied, fed and taking in quaint views with a great pleasure.

Enjoy the weekend, friends! x
