empty space, empty garden, spring garden, friendly garden

Poland means so many different things to me, you wouldn't believe, if I started right now I'd talk with no end so I'll spare you longer paragraphs. Above all Poland means green grass, lots of grass and fields, trees that promise shadows and are short of poise in the lack of regular trimming. Poland smells of fruit and dust, rain and cigarette smoke. It's overwhelming how many senses it activates. And there is a garden plopped tightly between acres of fences and others preserving their green space within gray lungs of a big town. It belongs to my in-laws and all the mini beasts one butterfly net couldn't hold at a time. For the first time discovered in its most vulnerable state, with barely a leaf seducing the eye. I loved it nonetheless. I loved it even more on days full of sunny spells only a gardening enthusiast in training would appreciate bringing those empty aisles to life with my imagination (what I still need to make time for is purchasing a pair of green rubber boots. Straw summer hat is simply not enough). What a shock to Nadia to find her favourite hiding spots open to view but soon she learned a steady rhythm of how to familiarize with the monochromatic landscape. You can still hide if those who seek are willing to try harder, if you happen to slump off of the wooden log dividing the plots while running - no damage is done, no flower head will curse you in silence and grandpa won't lift his arms up to the air in horror. Well, he never does it anyway.

Every afternoon back home the fun persisted. Nadia definitely made this place hers - she knew what to expect from certain behavior and how loud the door is allowed to get shut but also all the mess that got shoveled under the bed for the next day's best play was purposefully overlooked by grandma. Because finally there was a motion in slow paced lives of her grandparents, there were accidents happening, sugary drink spills and all kinds of unusual patterns of dirty hands on the walls made appearance. It was all awaited. You can even find Nadia's old toothbrush somewhere in the bathroom from when she insisted on brushing her developing teeth as grandma declined to part with it. Memories in objects, not always re-usable. Damian phoned us regularly but not overwhelmingly often, we had a deal of a breathing space. We lived for those moments like we lived for mum's pork chops. Soon the sun will focus on what has overwhelmed the eyes with emptiness and lack of shade. Soon we will experience it together with fresh produce falling to our hands eaten washed or deliberately not.

She's a friend. Spectacular and pregnant recently. She's the one I miss to share knowledge over the arsenal of shoes with or choose the right shape of jeans to complement my legs overly discouraged from showing. I miss her even more when new menu is introduced at my favourite lounge as there's nothing like sharing a meal you'd not normally order on a Monday afternoon. But I do get to see her to insane extent while traipsing through dusty bumpy Polish streets, I get used to having her on my speed dial. She's responsible for all my large bills thanks to the roaming mode and I'm responsible for her cravings and feet bunions. But she doesn't mind, walks bravely and sweet, carrying the bundle of joy she'll call her son along with her.

The sky was sympathetic today, no excess heat, not even moderate wind so we set off dressed lightly and irresponsibly. Lives lived to the full and back. So we walked up and down local Ethnographic Park presenting a range of agricultural buildings from all over Silesia, enormous open-air museum dotted with cottages, barns and a farm of flock of sheep accompanying our footsteps as they were let roam free at some point called our names and provided a morning of physical exhaustion. Not only we discovered the amount of rain our coats can take but that walking together might easily become our next best thing. If only our paths weren't divided by the English channel. But with the baby on the way I'm hoping for more unpredictable gatherings and moments of fun. After my friend's had some sleep first of course. So naturally kids are on topic and babies never leave our thought. It is the season of our lives to be less appropriate among others rolling their eyes on the amount of onesies that get mentioned in our conversation. But it wasn't like that for a long time and I'm delighted for her happiness. And sleepless nights. But also for her hands full of sweet chubbiness.

It wasn't long enough to start cursing the rarely pleasing sky and hide under the old cottage roof just to be reminded that if it rained it won't hesitate to persist with its attitude. A warm coffee for me and a reasonably brewed tea for my friend felt just right. And a delicious piece of cheesecake Nadia helped me devour. Time stood still (I could tell I didn't take my watch with me) but also it was a moment that felt so sacred - us girls plopped down on beaten up wooden bench warming our knuckles on taupe porcelain. She's been initiated - to soon be running alone those street corners getting her thoughts right at sidewalk flower stands and stopping to get a doughnut or bottle of still water. She'll find her paths, her best shrubs of evergreen fences to come back to any given morning or afternoon. She'll like the time only a sight of a nearby lake will make her feel, she'll stop and stare at the budding trees and wriggling pair of cotton rich socks.

And on our way back to the car she skillfully operates, Nadia struggled to cope with the ever changing attitude of clouds. She left her overcoat at home trusting the sky with her five year old faithful heart not long before it decided to play around with everything in its power. I gave her my jacket leaving me only in my light white shirt but a child looking ridiculous in oversized garment is better than a frozen child with a gigantic fever first thing after coming home. We made it to the car, believe us or not and I was half expecting to hear nothing for the next hour or so due to experiencing the power of howling wind from each side. Shockingly, it didn't happen and I tick this time as the best day we could dream of or dress for or both.

poland, spring, blue park, awesome time, todaymyway.com
travel, spring in poland, two on the road, todaymyway.com

I didn't expect parks to be as awesome as they were in Poland. I did expect low temperatures and high demand for playground explorations but anything that has started poking their heads out and shout with colour, this was a pretty surprise. So pretty we only took our morning routine seriously before making all sorts of decisions not to be back too early for lunch. At this time of year Poland is your most unpredictable friend therefore you just have to love it even more.

So the week started chilled, like prepare your warmest and most knitted layers because the streets are long and benches are cold. And the sun is still locked somewhere between the German border and deep forests of Czech Republic. But we packed our companions in hats and gloves of many different wool blends that we did not complain much. And then it got reasonably enjoyable - hats got pulled off, knees got exposed to warm air through their holes and all was looking good. There were just the two of us for the most part of our stay and although we enjoyed moderate company of others, this was the best formula for mind cleansing and feet exhausting escapade. My time was entirely made of ice cold bottled tea and strolls through the parks with this blonde little head in tow. I had time to fill my eyes with the beauty of a place I once roamed single and unemployed or hand in hand with this bearded man on so many days I'm engrossed to even type (he was too unemployed so that you know our reasons to be so desperate to wander). We hit the many playgrounds we could find and bought sweet sugary snacks nobody was aware we called lunch. We were the team that only a cloudy sky could scare off. Our families headed to work each morning at the hour I barely even move half of the body, the house went totally on silent as we were getting dressed removing sleep from our eyes. Sweet lazy mornings with a big amount of layers and a quick look at the outdoor thermometer. Most days we were ready before 10 am, with the right attitude and enough wool content to get us through the day.

Our luggage allowance set limits on our time here too - if we couldn't take it home, it was no point confusing the brain, no point drooling over object that will get discarded at the airport. Even if it's most sought after and pretty. I liked it a lot. I had no intention to purchase even though there is a list of what we ought to get from Poland each year that's beyond our grasp in England. You know, things like face masks I buy in bulk or important medication English doctors don't trust; Polish books with the right dose of eloquence and even more with just pictures only a five year old can appreciate. We searched none of these and it felt good (I may soon regret not getting into the lingerie department of Triumph's discounted collection but nobody will make me undress of all the layers I religiously put on that morning together with a thin coat of body butter from last night's bath that is).

I felt like a tourist that streets are recognized to an extent but discovered all over again. Because this town is thriving - buildings get knocked down but equally grow back in bricks; parks are dotted in colourful jackets going down the slides with their mums silently watching over. Or grandmas. Lots of them - the most wonderful free labour of love, pairs of retired arms this bunch of toddlers fall into (literally). I sat and not only watched this carefree girl of mine befriending squirrels and random kids half her age and height but was entwined with the peace I'm so used to at home. Taking all in without looking at the watch slightly too big for my fifth-grade girl's wrists - this made my entire stay. On the weekend though mums thrived as the best hosts - there were chats and endless gestures of love and affection, tons of home made calories and bought specialties so we all felt we were exposed to many wonders. On the weekend there were family gatherings and play dates and telephone conversations with Damian who missed his girls a lot. It was great. This time was superior even though Nadia had a mild cold and put her sneezing lessons in practice to avoid accidents.

And there were stories told each night as we cuddled together in bed of a reasonable comfort chasing shadows unfamiliar with the lights out. Sweet socked feet finding the best spot promising restful sleep and imagination playing games with our memory told in quick and chaotic sentences at the table the next morning. We girls know the amount of a good time we can have. And will not hesitate to repeat it anytime we can.

Firstly, I think you've seen some of the photos of places I grew up in on many occasions. Secondly, you've read about them in fair amounts already and thirdly... I still have some more to show you and will keep on highlighting them in years to come because they are taken in my happy place, the one I cherish the most. When you have something that your heart skips frantically just by thinking about it, you return to it time and time again especially when some of the people dear to your heart are still part of it. It makes me giggle just visualizing taking the train to places I've known by heart, hiking in the tall grass and soaking up the vibe of slow paced days among randomly located poppy fields. We don't usually plan what we are going to be doing in places I know they would surprise us if we try or not, this day started casually too - we spent the morning till evening roaming quiet streets and backtracks with my dad and two favorite people in the world. We're always up for an adventure. The day was hot and sunny, the water in the lake so inviting we just couldn't skip the pedal boat experience giving me all shades of pink not curable for entire week. I know I turned heads snapping away scenes of a random day but I found so much comfort in preserving them digitally, I didn't really mind being center of attention of this sleepy little town.

The weather forecast tried to prepare us for colder days so closed shoes and long sleeve tops found their way to my suitcase. And as usual when a girl has to play it cool, I think I handled the warmer front rather well as layering was not an option. I just wish my toes had more occasions to peek out and enjoy the sunshine. Next time folks, promise. We ate on the go, nobody is really sit-at-a-table-and-eat kind of person around here anyway so finger food and ready made meals were to follow our steps. And I loved witnessing how this little lady of mine is developing a relationship with places of my childhood, creating bond with the views locked in my heart for eternity. Seems like nothing has been touched here yet everything is different. In a good way for sure. xx

poland, explore the world
www.todaymyway.com, on the train

I recall exclaiming many truths since becoming an expat, one being a longtime saying that my heart has been happily divided. Not broken to pieces or replaced by new fragments but existing peacefully in two different spheres containing important portions of my life. Like enjoying morning piece of toast topped with the sweetest organically made jam sitting next to a lemon tea unthinkable in British milky tea loving households. Or laughing hysterically at occasions teeming with situations where telling if it is banter meaning no harm or a serious conversation not particularly funny to fellow foreigner onlookers is hard to distinguish (I once posted an old photo of me sporting long locks on Facebook saying I missed my long hair and got a response from my English friend advising me that I could get wigs on the NHS if I wanted. Yes, we still speak to each other). I secretly love it - it's the best reminder I'm doing all right in both places, still finding myself excited, bundled with thousand feelings popping up on a daily basis.

But this time it was different. The more we soaked in every minute of every day with uncontrolled bursts of laughter from our curious child, the closer we were to the idea of moving back to where we used to belong. One of the absolute best things about this trip was having everybody at arm's reach, a phone call away, streetcar ride ahead giving Nadia enough attention to fill the entire city. Not only that has turned my eye towards the streets we used to roam unemployed but happy - there are copious amounts of new buildings growing, near and far districts get much needed makeover from people living in their quarters, tenement houses shout with comparable in prices offers. Or is it just my vivid imagination playing tricks on me, making me believe that we're able to start over and be successful on a well-known soil? I didn't expect that it would be this hard. To feel homesick with every cell of my body. Seeing all the photos taken on our recent holiday doesn't help to ease my crazy emotions, this topic will definitely spark some serious conversations or will simply fade away amongst everyday chores and duties. Time will tell.
