║today my way║

We talk about our new role and new responsibilities often. We envision new life ahead with anticipation and giggle at the slightest mention of a diaper change. We know we will need every pair of hands that is flexibly willing to make them available to us. Since the first mention of the arrival of our son, Nadia was more than hands on with the idea. She would talk about her brother, draw sweet pictures of her holding him, feeding and even co-sleeping which may prove difficult in her bed stuffed to the brim with plush toys and mascots of sorts. I never wanted to go through this pregnancy without her being as much involved as a busy six year old can be. I'm happy no decision is made without her sweet input, every suggestion is rationally discussed and acted upon with the agreement of the three of us. Mostly (she still calls her brother Tom even though we agreed for it to be his middle name). She's been a whirlwind of activity preparing toys and gadgets they will play with together (cot mobile made of string and sticky notes, the result is pretty spectacular). That all makes me more of a superwoman having her on board!

Occasionally my mind rushes through the busy times we will surely experience like school runs or doctor appointments and her presence will be a godsend to put it lightly. I feel the pressure I may unnecessarily put on her instead of letting her twirl around the room before going out while I'll snap up all those onesie buttons. As I realize, those moments can be a tad stressful and overwhelming at first (there are lots of buttons on things these days) but we're not going to be keeping up to some kind of  a strict and precise schedule or a timetable pulling away from what's fun and enjoyable even in the most stressful moments.

I listen politely to friends and relatives telling me how great it is to have a little helper at hand. A girl that understands and awaits orders. I daydream otherwise and can't wait to do it all over again on my own. I'll try my very best to recognize the chore from a pleasurable activity, I'm still not quite prepared to be a perfect mother, neither want to raise a perfect, brilliantly hands on and too involved daughter (we haven't read all the books we bought yet so there are more important tasks to tackle!). Being supportive is enough. I'll happily (however tiredly) stay up until 3 a.m. if my whole household can get the rest it needs. I want to share but not delegate, I want to encourage not ask, I want to compliment without seeing results. I want Nadia's childhood to remain child-friendly and special for as long as possible.

And really her pearly laugh, a giggle, funny expression or suggestion will be an enormous help on its own. Those I will seek and those I will cherish more than feeling like scoring a live-in babysitter.

Since the day I laid my eyes on you I can hardly take them away. I can tell your face expressions by heart and your trait arrangement at any time of day and night. Today I'm seeing you differently. It's not that you've grown or developed new habits, likes and dislikes. Or that you like to tie your hair the new way, the way most six year old and older girls tend to get complemented for. It's a new role you've excitedly been practicing between drawing ponies and painting your nails the brightest pink. You're still my only and beautiful one needing assistance with things I will never refuse you assistance with. You're still welcome in the big bed in the morning accompanied by the bunch of your favourite toys that seem to share the same sleeping and waking times as you. You're still the one my arms know best and seek constantly at stupid hours - when you're busy drawing, scribbling, promising on brushing your teeth straight afterwards. You're still the only one I'm savoring ahead of time knowing soon we'll start sharing things like candy, space at the table or a hook in the bathroom. I'll share my arms you know so well it overwhelms. I'll divide, portion and slice. Time, space, arms and my heart.

You're ready to take on the new role as if you've always known there was meant to be a company in your life. You're so excited and your heart rate changes each and all of the time your brother is mentioned or seen dancing in my belly way after his soon-to-be bedtime. Time is non existent then because you make it fun and silly, hurting my ligaments already stretched as old chewing gum or pair of polyester tights. Because I know you love him already, the entire chunk of time called pregnancy has been your own in loving. You greet him at the wee hours and kiss him (my belly) goodnight when you're no longer capable of absorbing more that day. He's a lucky little turkey. The size of a butternut squash by the way. And in breech position but that's a story for another chapter here.

Today I see somebody else. With a drop of sadness but a whole stream of pride and satisfaction. I see the very picture of my right hand, not a helper and assistant in sleep deprived universe but a fully capable of deciding and coming with her own solutions partner in all things blue has a new meaning to. I tell you this. And your eyes light up like a snack is at hand (and you've only had a handful of it a minute ago). You know all of this because it's who you are, the very best sister before even meeting your brother. The better version of us, devoted, loving but mistakes making parents. And I'll have you know, you'll be loved in return. I can't wait to stand beside to witness and love you even more.

Sometimes the story is shared with others or it is lived through with quiet moments of self-discovery, no explanation needed, no questions asked as long as the sun is in full beam and denim rules until there's no breath left. Only few will know what I mean. This summer was no different yet all so very new to us in every aspect, humidity included. The squad hasn't changed, in fact being a part of well-known team is a reward on its own, acting as normal with people who will always notice things when they go wrong is a treasure easily competing with bunch of sticks of unfamiliar shapes. We found a good number of them, don't ask exactly how they got transported home but they did and I still dust around them weeks after the stock up enthusiastically. This summer rolled around slowly, almost like regretting the move the minute it set its foot here. I don't blame it, we're greedy bunch not easily satisfied with a warm day or two. We have a seaside after all so picking on ever so slight breeze and a cloud is our 5 to 9 job. Sometimes longer if bottle of prosecco is still half full. And then you experiment and learn the rule of forsaking with quite good reasoning backing you up because this part is kind of critical when it comes to having successful summer break or not. Do I carry a ball or a warm cardigan? And if I need both who will support me when none of it feels essential anymore? These are the problems, you guys.

Countryside was our answer to hesitant summer that didn't truly show up. Someday it is all we'll remember. The raw adventures with the only idea of touching as much as there is time and daylight for connected to views of no age but a great significance. This summer saw us a little more vulnerable after missing out on going on a proper trip abroad due to our car breaking down so the stakes were high and expectations unattainable. Not for long though. Make the most of what you've got type of deal was eventually settled on. We took it and soaked it up like there was no more sunny days to witness. The forest was the playground and the castle and the obstacle course. Sometimes all at once. Hands were full of unidentified objects, wide grins told the stories hearts played with ease, what else one could want?

This is what happens when you're surrounded by nature and the cold sea motivates only the bravest. The whole area sort of awaits your footsteps and maybe a loud hello to share the love the sun and rain pours into it to thrive while no one's watching. This is the best of what makes the summer stay with us for longer apart from areas of less fun to deal with like ticks and scratches and bees flying past noses so close no reassurance will ever be enough. In the land where we settled and got pregnant with our lady sunshine. The land we discover every day. And it's the perfect process.

This is a post of what we do best when we're at our most productive. Or I should have actually started that this is what Nadia does best but I assign some cutting and attaching tasks to myself so yes, we're all in it. School started last week so in slow motion everything falls into place, hair familiarizes itself with abundance of elastics, later then usual nights are far and almost forgotten. Every morning before we see the sunlight the rushing begins -- sleep washed from faces, packing daily essentials, making important hair decisions and checking school uniform for stains and tears. We do watch early kids channel too while influencing some cereal and tea. And off for the bus we go, scooter in hand and a book bag hanging from the stronger shoulder. We like our mornings, predictable and manageable on most days because there's always a room for chaos if you're aware of it or not.

Every time new chapter in our lives begins, excitement merges with aggravation, all parties included. New expressions emerge, words flow rapidly or are purposefully denied. We get it each time it occurs, most times a cuddle and a whisper is all that can help to pause and start inhaling rhythmically. Now and again I point to Damian we get a taste of what it will look like when Nadia's a teenager - against everybody and everything in sight. But we all get stressed at least five times during the course of a day struggling to come out untouched, why being so meticulous to ensure our children are safe from even a dash of cortisol? Handling it right is the answer, installing a way of dealing with meltdowns as a result of regular situations and starting school is one of them. Having to wake up brisk is one of them. Eating within a set period of time is one of them. But I like the way it's going, we're all adjusting trying to make it easy on everybody (for mama skipping eyeliner and a blush most times does the trick).

Before school invited all sorts of new behaviour we looked through a vast amount of drawings Nadia was involved in this year. Pile of shapes and hand made books awaited their big moment (she's simply obsessed - glue, stapler, sellotape, you name it, she's used it all to create one and only publications). I've been collecting lots of things that belonged to Nadia - her first pair of shoes, favourite cup she no longer uses, first tooth omitted by a Tooth Fairy so it's understandable I'd preserve the art that circulates in abundance around here. We've done it before, this time I introduced a folder full of clear pouches for things of irregular size and shape and of course simple binding a pile of drawings never gets old. One day I want to organize it and lay all her treasures together - for me to look at when she's studying away or traveling or just sitting next door painting nails. All memories locked in a Moroccan straw basket or wooden box upholstered in pink put away on the highest shelf next to hat boxes and Christmas decorations because the most wonderful part of all this is, it's priceless because it's hers. Excitement preserved in the best of ways. My take on a treasure.

trim-hair-at-home-tutorial-todaymywayblog

Her hair would always give me emotions. Naturally curly and luminous had tendency to fizz and stick out, break on ends while still being soft and thick. As I didn't have experience with hair other than mine and the perfection is still yet to achieve, this journey has been nothing short of fascinating. Given her scalp to kiss, bury my face in, I was handed full responsibility over its each follicle. Between washes and occasional conditioning sessions it needed all the affection I was there to give. And trimming. Started early on and continued until Rapunzel came along followed by Elsa in natural shade of nylon. Scissors were banned, hair elastics had hard time sticking around. But as we know some things are unavoidable and only right attitude can save us from occasional meltdowns so one afternoon we sat down and discussed the options. Nothing too drastic and unfamiliar, nothing overly routine-changing for most days. Nadia was kind enough to spare a minute and sit through the photos taken to document the process of trimming her locks which turned out better than we anticipated (the trimming not the sitting). Since a tiny pea that she was, her hair had tendency to grow in layers and I wanted to keep it that way or as more like it as doable.

hair-cut-tutorial-four-easy-steps-trim-your-hair-todaymywayblog

Soooo in four easy steps... after washing (1) and combing (2) wet hair, tie it reasonably tight in a ponytail so that it hangs to the front (3). Gently loosen it by pulling the elastic down and choose the length that you want to achieve (4). Using sharp scissors (very important as you don't want to mess the cut by trimming extra inches here and there and then some more) make one, confident cut. Steady hand and good posture is essential. And it's done and voila and you've just created volume by simply doing nothing extraordinary. It felt great! Accomplishing this special assignment gave me thrills and looking back on it I'm glad that we did.

And here are some behind the scene photos for your viewing pleasure. As a disclaimer nobody got hurt playing with the scissors used in photos below. Completely safe and harmless no matter how ridiculously big and striking they may look. Made of pure cardboard paper and coloured lovingly with non-toxic crayons. Used with care. Happy end of summer, friends!
