the tale, poland, summer
flowers, garden, awesome time
This seemed like an ordinary day but there are no ordinary days when you're on vacation with all five senses excessively used. We made sure the act of getting up was easy and there were not many preparations involved as less planned meant more inspired. It was best decision I made on an empty stomach so far. The temperature allowed us for more than just waltzing between flowerbeds noticing early sunlight filter through busy wings buzzing away vigorously all day long. I read an inspirational book, Damian was in charge of our picky dietary demands bringing deliciously ripe fruit to the table leaving Nadia finding her ways around what's accessible and a little limiting, suited to her current age and lifestyle (and taking her devoted grandma along with her). Seeing a Wonder Woman wearing a cape made of a finest terry come to life filled us with somewhat a bittersweet emotions. She is a happy, easily satisfied child, she loves being active and a little silly to entertain us big creatures but when it rarely involves those she's started loving only a couple of years ago the whole perspective of a good time changes. The trick here is to refill memories ever so often with the ones that have transformed our lives forever and are willing to stay inseparable without being overwhelming (whether it involves home-made capes or bouquets of randomly picked up flowers or not). A lot of interest came through simplest of activities - the obsession over weeding, rearranging and watering plants was real. So was the running and dancing so we thought a little body will naturally ease itself to sleep while we head for a date out.

An adult evening was spontaneously arranged for an open-air watching movie. It got dark quickly, we found ourselves on a double date with my cousin, almost eaten alive by mosquitoes not afraid to cut through fabric, in my opinion a pretty brutal thing to do. The dress code was obvious - if you don't want to count the itchy spots for the rest of the next week, you pull your best pants on, cover bare skin, laugh hysterically at Black Cat White Cat by Kusturica. Just to say, bare skin was unfortunately visible so pretend not to notice the insect bites on the photos. Because they are there like moles or birthmarks. Only more hated. It was a great night of same-minded people enjoying toothless smiles on a big inviting screen. We didn't intend to stay up past the movie so heading straight home felt as a relaxed ending to a beautiful date. How surprised we were to find a little unkempt head looking out the window and waving to us at almost midnight without a slightest care in the world. If you're in the mood for playing and parents will not be back soon, not used to being looked after by others, Nadia took full advantage of the time and space that was available for her. Only the next evening we arranged similar expedition so coming up with a new plan how to handle a five year old's bedtime routine on holiday was more than appropriate. Did it go as pre-planned? This girl's dedication to fun is beyond our comprehension. But there are no ordinary days while on vacation...

ice cream, big girl, ballerina
►►► Ballerina after the shows keeping her sugar levels in check. So proud of this girl we were celebrating with more colour and falvour than we had room for.

make up, nadia, kids fashion

It was two rainy days of an early July when effortless meant nothing to us. It was about vibrant shots of colour and all the satin features a little girl dreams of or talks about without pausing in case you aren't familiar with a five year old and her clutter of thought. This was such a fun time for everybody involved or not - after almost a year of pirouetting and spinning in all adequate directions, Nadia's first ballet performance in Alice in Wonderland as a bear picnic attendant and a skipping bunny was delightful to watch. I made sure I told absolutely everybody about the show and hoped I was kind enough not to end up too many conversations with covering a variety of topics on the progress of stage set-up, arm movements or elaborate updos intended to stay immaculate for at least the first interval of the show but not necessarily. Some people were more than grateful I did so ;) The atmosphere was great, Nadia looked super stunning in her lilac dress but the full make up needed for the purpose of avoiding the light on stage to drain the colour from her face never returned after the first show. I suppose having it done once and touched up so many times was too much devotion for a little girl. And I liked her that way, with cheeks of a natural pink, shiny eyes without pigmented sparkles.

So this is my ballerina as of early July, in well-crafted gown to be worn on all occasions after the show, most recently at a breakfast table and on late evening bike rides. I guess not having enough time to devote to fashion (as there are other things to dedicate energy to when you're five) but still wanting to look good means throwing the most glamorous fabric on and be ready for an adventure. Don't tell me you wouldn't do just the same.

poland, woods, lake, memories
poland, memories, family time, uncle

I remember walking to school with my brother and a group of girls and boys from our neighbourhood every day from age eight onwards. In the summer, days had us spending most of our time outdoors, unsupervised, climbing hazelnut trees, dipping toes in the waters of wild rivers, eating home grown or wild unwashed fruit, riding bikes or exploring deeply mysterious woods nearby with all the other kids doing just the same. My mum was not always sure of where we were. We took fresh air and the open space for granted, it all belonged to us. We used our imagination and creativity in our escapades, scrapped knee was only a two minute drama because others were waiting to dip into a game of pigeon hunting or finding the best you'll-never-find-me spots.

And then on our recent holiday in Poland where I spent most of my life, my uncle showed us round his neighbourhood that reminded me of a place I used to run wild as a child. My mind was looking to recreate a texture of the sludgy bottom of the lake I was taking my first lessons in swimming, the subtly intoxicating in all weather scent of nature I remember without hints; leaves, pine cones, interesting undergrowth finds that accessorized my space back then and are even more intriguing now. I'm convinced I'd feel at my happiest here at any time of the year making it the loveliest reading/relaxing nook in the world.

Now I'm looking at such places as oasis of relaxation not a treasure hunt; I'd turn my face towards the sun with an interesting collection of letters in hand instead of chasing ducks in the tall grass. I'm all for calming, lounging experience but don't say anything to Nadia who's been in an adventurous mode ever since. Being so desk-bound these days, my kind of relaxing is the kind that takes me back to dearest and most innocent times in my history, feeling a little homesick is only a slight exaggeration. We met my uncle and his partner twice this time around as their company is nothing but uplifting and so laid back I wish I could create myself. He is my grandma's youngest brother I mentioned here a couple of times before. An avid traveler, photographer and computer enthusiast has a heart of gold and a lot of lovely places to show up his sleeve. We said our good byes to the shiny luminous surface and headed for delicious flavorful dinner at my uncle's place. We could stay longer and did, sharing stories over coffee and home made pie. I can't wait to show you more of what we did and what didn't disappoint. Happy summer, friends x

mama home alone, food, french toast

I mean food... did you expect to find it here? I have no business in posting recipes other than I eat and like my plate look appetizing. If this convinces you enough to stay and read on, please do but be quick -- the butter's melting. I have cooked practically nothing all month long and then whisked together some eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and soaked my bread in it hours before we flew on holiday. Time I was most excited spending folding cotton neatly, I was dying to taste the result of nearly rearranging our tiny kitchen. It was amazing and the whole floor smelt of cinnamon instead of curry powder (sorry, neighbours). I prepared three slices of an English wholemeal toast bread and Polish white slice to experience a little variety. So when the cinnamon fume has settled and you want to make some of your own, here's what you need to replicate this summer project:
  • 4 slices wholemeal bread or any bread you like
  • 3 biggish eggs, whisked
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup and more for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • blueberries
  • 4 pats of butter
  • oil to spread on a sheet pan
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and whisk all ingredients together. Dip each slice of bread in batter and place it on a sheet pan spread with oil. Leave it to soak for about a duration of a remix of your favourite song then top the bread with blueberries. Bake for 25 minutes until bread is golden brown. Remove from oven and garnish with butter and maple syrup. Serve while freaking hot. Or go straight to the original recipe and do just the same.

I'm definitely not done after trying this simple summer recipe, if you're happy with more easy, mostly one-person-eat-it-all quick meals aka mama-home-alone, you're in right hands. So it turns out I actually like cooking. What a hugely reassuring thought. Happy day, friends x

tiger heart, black and white, my style

I am anxiously awaiting some big moves that will shake the ground even with the quietest of roar. I'm especially excited to witness a few of my personal preferences shift out of the comfort zone I plan to reduce more and more by each week. And the summer has been very supportive to me, I feel I'm capable of anything I attempt to do to my hair, bank account, relationship. I'm ready to put my foot forward hoping to handle new situations with enough grace and gratitude this planet has witnessed. And speaking of feathers - a new routine is next in line to get entirely rearranged - do you think I can style my hair less and still look perfection or somewhere near it? A specific dyeing is in order, a little shredding or a fringe I'm not so familiar with. And I absolutely have to do it now that I told you.

P.S. The photo... We tried to hide from sudden rainpour but got soaked eventually when attempted suicidal walk home. Pictures of a pitiful state we failed to avoid will never make it online. I have plenty of images you may like much more so that we can stay positively connected. Happy Thursday, friends xx

holiday, velvet flowers
the long awaited story, poland
awesome day, flowers, garden, poland

The perks of admiring the views of a well-kept, inviting garden means in short sharing all the work and excitement with everybody involved in creating it. So getting personal resulted in watering the plants with old, rusted equipment that is way fancier than any pink, decorated in daisies watering can, hand-picking last rays of sun in juicy roundness of half-wild grown produce that never made it home (too accessible, too delicious). We never found the balance between the responsible and frivolous, I'm pretty sure this was the reason why we spent so much time hidden behind the tall hedge and mallows slowly being eaten by the army of snails not nearly as interested in next door plants as they were in ours. We spent time catching butterflies, reading, sleeping, talking, listening to the local radio station humming sounds of sorts. And my floral skirt galore I present up close because it felt right to steal some snaps in the presence of natural beauty being seen around.

Hey, and I'm back and I'm loving being back - catching up on your summer, sorting out through stuff I nabbed without guilt on holiday. That little, unintentionally extended silence on the blog was dedicated to things I've neglected crazily like actually finishing reading a book or finishing watching a movie. It is however a total pleasure to write again, resize images and feel you coming and staying. Thank you!

There was nobody to pet and not a soul to chase or run from in delight but still there was lots to do and more. We served as companions for all ideas, weird or subtly disturbing to a parent's heart. And now for the hat that served me well throughout the days of shocking temperatures. It was enough to the soul to get the rays enjoying its journey and stopping just below the black ribbon on the brim but there were times when it was too spontaneous for me to react. So my tan happens because the sky tries so hard. Catches me unprepared and unsuspecting. Not kind, summer.
