║today my way║

This is in fact an evidence of our personal journey through countless attempts to hobble blonde curls that has never stayed the same at any given time. It started with locks of springs that once brushed were still far from neatly presented. As time flew by Nadia's hair started to straighten up creating more of a 'hay-do' but instead of daydreaming of fancy hairdos and braids I turned to professionals - every two to three months blonde hair got a three-dimensional cut so it created volume without looking untidy. I wanted to prevent split ends but the regular trimming also resulted in more shapely pony tail (or pig tails). However since Nadia's hair didn't really have time to grow between cuts, without guilt I decided to give scissors a rest, let's say at least four months until her hair is completely arrangeable without hundreds of hair clips and hair bands to keep it in place. Allowing it to stay healthy by applying a drop of moisturizing conditioner on its ends she enjoys tidy and fairly frizzy-less result.

I can see many girls Nadia's age whose hair is short and kept asking myself if choosing regular trimming over letting it grow just like Rapunzel's is a way for less tangled, more flatter streaks. In Poland girls' hair is usually kept untouched until their first communion when all of them want to look like princesses and nobody ever thinks to cut it off before then. No denying my girl has inherited her dad's thick and quick-growing locks with more shades on a golden palette than nature can hold. Washing it less frequently when she is ill or having a cold doesn't make it look less luscious. In fact you wouldn't notice the difference between freshly washed locks and a four day break in shaking shampoo bottle. Imagine mummy's greasy hair after three days...

As of now Nadia's hair is slowly finding its right direction with regular brushing and two to three washes per week using a gentle shampoo. Whatever her hair feels like it always makes for pretty photos.

I'm asking mamas out there - how do you manage your dolls' hair? What are your swear-by routines to retain healthy, pretty looking locks for your daughters? I'm anxious to find out.

Clearly insane weather sneaked into our backyard and I couldn't help but add our share of snow fun here (have you noticed we still keep our baby Christmas tree? I just can't bring myself to part with it unless I had a garden to plant it in...). I guess this kind of winter fun is the best - not overly planned or fussy, just grab your coat, warm gloves and stomp your feet or lie diagonally on the white surface! Funnily enough, waiting for the first balmy sign of spring I welcome every snowflake squeezed into cracks in pavement, alleys and paths nearby with child-like excitement.

I'll leave you with first (and only?) snow-hugged day this season and suffer my newly pierced ears. Nadia was a brave girl but her mama is one hardly-pain-bearing soul and had a few odd moments of post-piercing trauma. Not really looking forward to sleep on my left side...

The special thing about any trip is that you can plan it again to recreate the excitement. And twice as much the excitement if we talk summer months! Well, the talks have already started and diaries have been flipped through for an accurate date which at the exact moment feels like we could indulge in July. Of course increasing possibilities to achieve most of what we would love to do is always a juggle between what is expected of us and what feels like important just for the three of our family. We love the buzz of having too much of everything and everybody (in a good way) therefore cannot wait for another season of our life on the continent. No words necessary for explaining photographs attached to this post - they are pure features of our recent winter escape to the coldest part of this world but hey, still the best to visit at anytime.

P.S. *smiling like a Cheshire cat* It's always a thrill to open one of my favourite blogs in the morning but earlier this week I was shocked to find out a pair of lovely kids rain boots was waving at us as a giveaway win to one lucky reader (Nadia!). Just before rainy season in England (spring, I mean ;) Happy mama and even higher skipping daughter cannot wait to hear the splashy sound of puddles.

It's not our marriage anniversary we've celebrated yesterday but the day we have actually started dating and I like to consider this date (23rd January) to be a signpost in all the years ahead of us. It's been ten fantastic, overwhelming, magical and glorious well-endowed years with the best cook by my side whose fried chicken not once saved me from starvation and has taught me to fall in love with the most random things. Our tale is far from blowing away but whenever I think about how we've gotten so close to each other, I feel a little thrill. I can't imagine sleeping alone, not sharing things, arriving home and swaying around desolated rooms. It feels both like we've met a second and a lifetime ago and I'm so thrilled continually counting.

The day is over but I'm planning lots and lots of anniversary surprises and getaways throughout the year so stay tuned for the upcoming events. And forgive me for the quality of the photo above, my poor BlackBerry is to be replaced soon.

I literally rely on Pinterest since its day one utterly losing the track of time while on it. And recently it has hit me non-negotiably that I have this thing for owls. They attract my eyes from every angle whether on fabric or in more fragile compositions. Staring and frowning almost without a cause bring silent contrast to everything that's cheerful and playful in an apartment of which toddler is in charge. Here are a couple of my favourite items spotted on Pinterest through its vast finds where the birds in their tough poses (cute, almost surprised owl purse is an exception) celebrate a happy escape from the forest. Why not straight to my flat?

You'd think you have to convince me to travel three hours in an unbelievably cold day, walk for about similar amount of time and come back home just before it gets too dark to dine out but actually a week in Poland has prepared me for anything unusual happening to our outdoor thermometer. I have posted a black and white comic of our recent trip to London based park as entry in a 'Britain's Best Days Out' competition, today have a look at the same odyssey in colour. I can hardly choose between those two, they're both unique in their own way and this time you won't damage your sight by contemplating little captions to the photos attached. As we take Nadia almost everywhere with us these days, she's pretty much adjusted to the restaurant etiquette by now and became a valuable meal company. After a busy but thrilling day in London, we ate at Ciao little bar/restaurant trying riskily new tastes (I loved grilled bruschetta with tomato and mozzarella cheese pictured above). What a great way to perk up our week!

Trying not to go out if it’s way too cold outside this Wednesday we made an exception for an amazing adventure to the Battersea Park Children’s Zoo in collaboration with moneysupermarket discount vouchers through our favourite parents’ networking website Tots100.

We found the place without a slightest hurry, parked our car just opposite the entrance with a river Thames view and pulling our hats and gloves tightly on our ears and fingers – walked in with a serious spring in our step to be greeted by a children-friendly feature: a slide! And a lot more hopping in front of us with each yard as we walked by. Frozen thumbs up for such great idea: constantly on the move mode toddlers get occupied with jumping, sliding, climbing while parents watch their monkey moves before leading them to quieter areas: animal encounters, enormous sandpit with equipment for sand creations of every shape and consistency. As we were almost the only visitors at the park, it felt like having it all exclusively shaping up for us with every further step! Imagine it filled with kids and you have a whirlwind of fun for every single one of them! At the sandpit Nadia swapped running for a tiny motorbike riding and explored the rest of the land on wheels (wheels always seem to come in handy when on an adventure) stopping occasionally to point at animals in their natural habitat and unnatural poses (running meerkat).

There are some cool elements to the place: real lobster red fire engine and fire putting out machine even a little girl will approve. On our way out Nadia has found her ‘utopia’ among a family of wooden bears – she was running around their silent statues inviting me for a tea in Mr and Mrs Bear house. Just think of all the funny possibilities for more than one child it could be! When asking Nadia about summarizing our mid-January trip and asking how much she would rate the place for our review on the scale of 5, here was her reply (much more the meaning of it): “I’ll give it 5 because that’s what I can count to” then curled up on my shoulder and napped for the rest of journey home since that’s what a tired with excitement three year old girl would do.

We had an explosion of fun at the park (just examine the constantly smiling tiny face) and will be coming here while in the area. Thank you for the opportunity.

UPDATE: We didn't win 'Britain's Best Days Out' competition but my review in a form of a comic strip was shortlisted among 4 other blogs for 'a creative approach to writing the review'. Couldn't be happier!!

Taking those photographs was something I had to experience to fall in love with my home town again. It's neither a touristic destination nor one of world wonders but has enough ingredients to never put a camera down especially at dusk when the weak sun is trying to slide quietly down the naked branches. I'm less than a photographer and those images will never make onto the big walls but feeling like a tourist in my own city while capturing its prettier side makes up for any faults. Being a bit bored with images that sparkle with colours I turn to shadow, shabby buildings, empty streets. They look much better here, contemplated for familiar spots, make me melt like a cheese on a macaroni. You have a minute? Let's melt and caramelize.

I Have stopped taking rain too personally - if it has to fall, we let it bounce off an umbrella with a pair of running feet underneath. A week of feverish cold made us want to go out immediately - with or without an umbrella. So we did by visiting Nadia's two cousins and staying up late to finish a delicious pizza while our blond cherub ran between empty tables with a balloon she got from the staff serving food. It was a really fun evening and yummy excuse to get together.

I'm not going to lie about a hidden wish I had while visiting Silesian tracts: lots and lots of snow that sticks to gloves, freezes our ears off, falls crazily straight into our eyes! We didn't experience a snowstorm but a light shower of snowflakes so fragile they hardly covered our hats and didn't fall steadily for long but showed up for enough winks to get snapped up. The real winter snow fell the weekend after we came back home but I couldn't possibly get saddened up upon such unpredictable feature as snow. I've only kept telling myself: next time we'll get snowed in even if it means whisking away to the mountain countryside.

Photographing Bytom (occasionally snowy) wasn't a challenge since the dim dusky light created by smoke coming out of the chimneys contrasted beautifully with dark facades, grey and red bricks and I have gotten fully into bringing it all out. I recognize current trend in photographing rough, raw buildings exposing their natural yet faded beauty through light and shadow. Wouldn't have thought my town gave me so much joy to capture. Come back for the best part - taking snapshots just before the sunset. Already makes me want to hop on a plane to see it once again.

Unexpected as it was and equally cold, our feet led us to a place non existent on the surface (while in Poland, of course). To get to the died down heart of a black coal mine Guido we had to wear protective helmets (in every colour of the rainbow) and without a scent of fear be able to take a journey almost to the center of the earth (which with a child under 7 takes us 170 meters into the blackest space). Our guide showed us the furthest tunnels and told about horses helping with coal transport. I'd have never thought about visiting such weird place but thanks to my uncle (the same who stayed with us in September) we had a bit of a history lesson. Mines are usual view in southern parts of Poland, my father worked in one before I was born and I could easily recall a few names taking a lift down the mine for at least forty years in their lifetime but never visited one. Now I appreciate more their hard work. Nadia enjoyed running through the tunnels and laughed hard seeing her bear wearing protective helmet in matching colour. After the scary escapade we went back to my uncle's pad and enjoyed roasted tenderloin with dumplings for lunch.

I was really into wearing hat and almost snake-snarled scarf all the time while out in the freezing cold and gloves never left my hands for insanely long but I couldn't help but caught a cold while back in England anyway. Under the watchful Damian's eye I'm slowly getting back to my healthy blogging self.
